Get to know these Headlining acts performing at SING JAZZ this year.
Slinky rhythms, relaxed glamour, smoky harmonic progressions. For the fourth year running, the Singapore International Jazz Festival is back. The iconic Event Plaza at Marina Bay Sands will resound for 30 hours over three days and nights with performances by multiple Grammy Award winners from 31st March till 2nd April. Ahead of the much anticipated return of SING JAZZ next month, we’re charting out all you need to know about these headliners at SING JAZZ 2017:
Corinne Bailey Rae
On Friday, 31st March, the festival opens with Corinne Bailey Rae, winner of two Grammy awards, and who was the fourth female British act in history to have her first album debut at number one on the UK album charts.
Following Bailey Rae, on the second night comes a series of contrasting acts. First up is Nik West, the sassy funk bassist and vocalist, who has performed with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, Prince, and George Clinton/ Parliament Funkadelic.
Youssou N’Dour with Le Super Étoile de Dakar
West will then be followed by another Grammy winner – the Senegalese Youssou N’dour with Le Super Étoile de Dakar, giving us a heady and inspired mix of Cuban rhumba, African sass, hip-hop, jazz, and soul. Groove to the powerful tenor tones of Youssou N’Dour. Noted as “simply one of the best singers alive” by Peter Gabriel, Youssou N’Dour mixes traditional African mbalax together with a blend of other sounds like Cuban rumba, hip-hop, jazz and Soul.
Raúl Midón Trio
The conclusion on Sunday features first the Raúl Midón Trio, whose founder guitarist Raúl Midón seamlessly melds and fuses Jazz, Classical, Flamenco, R&B and other genres into his playing, decorating the whole with his improvised ‘vocal trumpet’.
The final spectacular act is super-producer and songwriter David Foster, winner of no less than 16 Grammy awards, with a circle of friends that includes Chaka Khan, Nick Zavior, and Dira Sugandi.
The Late Show
An exciting new feature of this year’s festival is The Late Show, to be held indoors at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, starting at 10 p.m. and going on till 4 a.m., featuring live music in a rather more intimate club setting. While jazz may have begun in club settings, This late-night party will happen in a luxuriously retrofitted space with VIP table service, all curated by Robbie Hoyes-Cock, founder of Singapore’s largest, most exciting and celebrity-studded Grand Prix Season after-parties. Acts at The Late Show will feature international artists and DJs such as Incognito, electronic duo Basement Jaxx, Al McKay’s Earth, Wind & Fire Experience, and multiple platinum and Brit Award winners Rudimental DJ Set. Particularly exciting is the VIP Green Room giving guests the opportunity to interact with the stars performing over the weekend.
As if that line-up weren’t exciting enough, other acts include Ray Parker Jr, Gilles Peterson, the Adam James Lee Trio, and local group Raw Earth doing a BB King tribute. SING JAZZ 2017 promises to be a celebrity-driven and unforgettable weekend of music.
