MANHUNT 2016 – “…And Beyond”

Now into its 29th year, MANHUNT 2016 returns with 30 finalists who aspire to breed change into their lives. Comprising of 20 MANHUNT and 10 SENIOR MANHUNT finalists, the 2016 MANHUNT finals will take place just under a month from now on the 27th of August 2016 at the One Farrer Hotel in Singapore.

The above is a quote that inspires and encourages us to look ahead into the days and years that lie ahead of us, and start living every moment from then on, in search of a better future, and a better us.

Each week from now till the finals, COVERED Asia will feature 5 MANHUNT and 1 SENIOR MANHUNT 2016 finalists endeavouring to become the overall 2016 champions of their respective categories.

MANHUNT 2016 Contestants

#1 – Eugene Francis Ng

Who is Eugene?

The 28 year old part Eurasian and part Chinese qualified financial consultant had always found a career in financial planning to be a daunting one. Yet despite being fully aware of what he considers to be a “stigma” tied to the profession, he is no stranger to standing firm when faced with challenges before him. “(Nothing in the world comes easy) so why not be the educator of your field, and provide the utmost assistance with your expertise”, quips Eugene.

What he’s most thankful for?

Eugene was never a good student and faced significant difficulties when it came to his studies. During his studying years at the Singapore Institute of Management, he nearly terminated his studies. However, inspired by his parents and his brother, he persevered and eventually graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Finance.

#2 – Jasper Lee

Who is Jasper?

23 year-old Jasper is a full-time undergraduate in NUS, and is working part-time as a football coach in JSSL-Arsenal Singapore. Having painfully experienced a slip-disc, and having gone through spondylolisthesis corrective surgery -a process which involves having spinal metal implants inserted into one’s back to hold the spine in position, Jasper is one living example of how to positively work through a handicap.

Having been an athlete in his younger years, Jasper felt defeated from having sustained a herniated (slipped) disc, and as a result of the injury and being unable to exercise, he found himself at the receiving end of being teased for having put on a lot of weight. In spite of much ridicule, Jasper would go on to take destiny into his own hands. Coming from a military-style family, with both parents serving in the army, Jasper was taught to be independent. With that, Jasper then embarked on a fitness journey that has now led to him being fit once again, and possibly in the best shape of his life.

Who is Ryan?

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Real Estate Management major knows what a life of hard knocks is like first hand. Life was never always easy for the 27 year old. Ryan knows what it is like when basic needs, like a roof over his head, food & education, etc., are not met as a child up as a child. After graduating, Ryan pursued a career as a Real Estate Agent. Ryan recounts how he started off his career with no contacts, no money, no experience, and no support system around him. Not even his own friends, family and relatives were around help him weather the storm that he was working through.

What he’s most thankful for?

Growing up, Ryan took on many different part-time jobs in effort to earn extra pocket money and put himself through school. Ryan believes that it has been because of the vital life lessons gained through these experiences, that he better equipped to cope with the challenges faced when he stepped into the working world following his graduation from NUS.”Work hard in silence & let success be your noise”. – Frank Ocean, quotes Ryan when asked to sum up his persevering outlook on life.

#4 – Louis Chan Kar Wai

Who is Louis?

A young and driven individual with his eyes set on a Bachelor Degree in Accountancy and Economics at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The all-rounded 21 year old was a former member of his junior college football team and student council, before being commissioned as an officer during his National Service days with the Singapore Armed Forces.

What he’s most thankful for?

Life was not always a bed of roses for Louis, as he recounts how we struggled to cope with the heavy commitments faced during his earlier academic years. Fortunately, Louis’ optimism and hard-working attitude eventually enabled him to perform well in his GCE A-level examinations. Louis is currently working part-time as an Associate at Abercrombie and Fitch whilst waiting for his University term to start, and we hear he’s also quite a talented around the kitchen.

#5 – Teo Wei Kiat

Who is Wei Kiat?

Presently a First-Year Accountancy student at the Nanyang Business School in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Wei Kiat is a sporty individual, strongly motivated to staying as fit and active as possible. Aside from practicing wushu in his earlier years, at Catholic High School, he later picked up water-polo whilst at St Andrew’s Junior College. Wei Kiat currently represents NTU in the sport of water-polo at the inter-varsity games. Additionally, Wei Kiat also looks up to the conservation contributions of the late Steve Irwin, and hopes to one day volunteer with a wildlife and/or animal effort.

What he’s most thankful for?

Growing up during his secondary school days, Wei Kiat was constantly being pushed around, the result of him being the smallest kid in class. Inspired by the physique and athletic capabilities of, he began working out fervently at the gym and participating in various sporting events in effort to further push his physical limits.

Who is Gavin Goh?

Few people have had the opportunity that Gavin has had to have lived extensively in various cities all over the world. Born in London, Gavin who is now 30, has spent much of his youth growing up in cities such as Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Birmingham. On his secret to living a well-rounded life, the former member of the rugby and American football high school and college team, attributes his balanced lifestyle to 3 main pillars, being fitness, music and taking on intellectual games.

What he’s most thankful for?

Apart from taking up recreational sports such as basketball, rugby, American football and varied extreme sports. Musically inclined, with a passion for performing arts, Gavin also plays the violin and sings. “Musical theatre is a very important part of my life, and I am fortunate to have been able to experience countless shows at both West End and Broadway”, comments Gavin.

In his spare time, Gavin, who is an active member of Mensa, also likes to apply himself mentally in taking on intellectual challenges that force him to stretch the limits of his logical reasoning, for only by “pursuing a well-rounded life and pursuing one’s passions can one truly find ambitious satisfaction”. adds Gavin.
